It was announced this week that Gowan Co. was acquiring the dinitroaniline herbicides from Dow AgroSciences. This includes Treflan, Balan,Surflan , Sonalan and other popular herbicides. The dinitoaniline (yellow) herbicides are some of the oldest and most widely used herbicides worldwide. Many of these were developed by Dow ( Eli Lily, Elanco) in the early 1960s and still are at the foundation of the herbicide programs for several broadleaf crops. They kill developing seedling weeds by stopping cell division at the root tips. They are widely used here in cole crops, peppers, celery, melons, kale, onions, and several other vegetables but not lettuce. Acquisitions like this are good for the vegetable crop industry. Gowan Co. is headquartered right here in the heart of desert specialty crop production and will be more sensitive to the needs of this industry.
