NEW  M.S. Fellowships in Ecohydrology of Forest Health and Restoration

Ph.D. Fellowships in Ecohydrology

National Phenology Network Office Coming to the UA   Over the past two years, Julio Betancourt (USGS and Adjunct Professor in Geosciences), David Breshears (UA School of Natural Resources) and other faculty at the UA have been collaborating with Mark Schwartz of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and about 100 other scientists to develop a dense network of repeatable seasonal observations on plants and animals across the US. (see details)

Jason receiving award from UA President Shelton

At 2006 ISPEFest, Jason Field won an award to represent the Global Climate Change GIDP (Graduate Interdisciplinary Degree Program) in a Dec 7 GDIP Showcase meeting. Jason's poster will be presented there and President Shelton will award him a $500 check. Board of Regents and others have been invited to attend. The title of the poster is:"Simultaneous measures of competing erosion types: water-centric focus neglects potential importance of wind-driven soil transport", by Jason P Field, David D. Breshears, Chris P. Zou, and Jeffrey J. Whicker [Los Alamos National Lab].

WSM 696: Personal Vision, Leadership and Communication Skills for Environmental Scientists

Faculty Vacancy Announcement (2 positions) (closed)

New publication in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA [Oct 10 05]  New research documents widespread die-off of piñon pine across the southwestern USA in response to a recent drought.  The recent drought was not as dry but was warmer than the previous die-off-inducing drought of the 1950s.  Trees at wetter as well as drier sites died in response to the recent drought, whereas generally only trees at drier sites appear to have died in response to the 1950s drought.

Publication:  [Oct 10 05] Breshears, D. D., N. S. Cobb, P. M. Rich, K. P. Price, C. D. Allen, R. G. Balice, W. H. Romme, J. H. Kastens, M. L. Floyd, J. Belnap, J. J. Anderson, O. B. Myers, and C. W. Meyer. Regional vegetation die-off in response to global-change-type drought.  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA .

Vegetation Dieoff: [Sept 28, 05] - Prof. Breshears attended aNational Academy workshop on "Earth-atmosphere Functioning: Understanding and Responding to Multiple Environmental Stresses".  He presented two talks highlighting research on drought-induced vegetation dieoff from the 1950s and the 2000s, potential land-surface feedbacks to the atmosphere, and implications related to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Report.

Ecohydrology commentary published [Oct 7 05]  Prof. Dave Breshears provides a personal perspective on ecohydrology in the new issue of the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America:  “ An Ecologist’s Perspective of Ecohydrology”.

School of Natural Resources Graduate Seminar [Oct 6 05]  M.S. student and former McNair Scholar Colleen Boodleman presented a seminar to other graduate students on her previous research conducted at the University of Wyoming: title.

Invited seminar presented at NMSU [Oct 5 05]  Prof. Breshears presented an invited seminar at New Mexico State University , hosted by the Department of Biology:  “Vegetation dynamics and erosional processes: thresholds and uncertainties in dryland ecosystems”.

New post-fire wind erosion manuscript in press [Oct 4 05]   Whicker, J. J.,    J. E. Pinder III, D. D. Breshears, and C. F. Eberhardt.  Increased wind erosion from forest wildfire:  overlooked implications for contaminant-related risks. In press: Journal of Environmental Quality.

New Carbon Measurement: [Sept 23, 05] - Dr. Mike Ebinger visited our lab to discuss recent progress in LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Dr. Ebinger and Prof. Breshears are helping to pioneer the application of LIBS for measuring soil carbon. Prof. Breshears and Dr. Zou are exploring the development of a dual LIBS calibration laboratory partnership with Dr. Ebinger.

New USDA  Ecohydrology Fellow: [Sept 15, 05] - Congratulations to Jason Field, recipient of a USDA Ecohydrology training fellowship.  The grant for the fellowship supports Ph.D students pursuing a research on ecological and hydrological interactions, and is lead by Dr. Breshears in collaboration with Drs. Phil Guertin, Travis Huxman and Paul Brooks, all at the University of Arizona . A call for three additional Fellows to begin in 2006 will be forthcoming.
