College Advisory Councils
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Governance Approach

 

The college has multiple avenues for receiving advice, including alumni, various commodity and scientific organizations, higher education organizations, CALS unit administrators, and CALS employee advisory councils. The entries below will have the purpose/mission plus any web links for each council. Each Advisory Council has a liaison person on the Executive Council when communication with the Executive Council (in either direction) is appropriate. The advisory councils are:

EMPLOYEE GROUP COUNCILS

Faculty Council
The Faculty Council is the elected Faculty Senators that are from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. They give a faculty perspective to the Dean and meet regularly.The Faculty Council meets regularly, sometimes with the Dean and sometimes alone. Topics for discussion include issues that come before the Faculty Senate and the college, or any other faculty related topics that would benefit from group discussion. The Council selects its own chair. Members of the Faculty Council can be found on the list of committees. Liaison for Executive Council to the Faculty Council is: Gene Sander
 
Staff Council
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Staff Council exists to enhance communication between staff and administration regarding the role of classified staff. We hope to enable staff to improve the quality of their work environment and elevate the morale and spirit of cooperation in CALS. The CALS Staff Development Team mission is to develop an environment that inspires personal and professional growth and educational opportunities for classified staff that will add value to the mission of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Members of the CALS Staff Council and CALS Staff Development Team can be found on the list of committees. Liaison for Executive Council to the Staff Council is: Debby Janes, Executive Assistant to the Dean. In addition to the activities at the college level, there is also the University of Arizona Staff Advisory Council, with university-wide membership and activities.
 
Student Council
This description will be developed. the Student Council is in the process of reorganization. Liaison for Executive Council to the Student Council is: David Cox.
 
Appointed Personnel Council
The Council represents the year to year appointed personnel. There is also an University of Arizona Appointed Professionals Advisory Council. Liaison for Executive Council to the Appointed Professionals Advisory Council is: Alma Sperr.

COLLEGE-WIDE COUNCILS

Dean's Advisory Council
The Dean's Advisory Council provides overall advice to the Dean. It consists of representatives from faculty, appointed personnel, county extension directors, faculty council, diversity committee, alumni council, department heads, executive council, staff council, and a graduate and undergraduate students. Members of the Dean's Advisory Council can be found on the list of committees. All members of the Executive Council are members of the Dean's Advisory Council so there is no specific liaison designated.
 
Quality Guidance Council
The Quality Guidance Council is the vehicle for the CALS continuous improvement or total quality management program. It was begun in 1993 and operates with teams that evolve as needed and disband when the job is completed. Example teams over the years are: communications, red tape, staff development, business practices, and distributed learning. Current council members and teams titles/members are listed on the CALS committees page. Liaison for Executive Council to the Quality Guidance Council is: Colin Kaltenbach.
 
Alumni Council
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Alumni Council Board of Directors consists of approximately 32 members drawn from a wide spectrum of alumni throughout the United States. The Council fosters and promotes interaction among the College's students, its administration, faculty and alumni. To this end the Council shall develop, encourage and sponsor programs that will foster fellowship and mutual benefit among all members and thereby promotes the goals of the Council and the College.  The council holds three meetings per year: Homecoming, spring and a summer retreat.  There is a second alumni board, The Council of Alumni and Friends of the School of Family and Consumer Resources, which operates independently from the CALS Council. ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCILS

Executive Council
This 5 member group includes the dean and associate deans for academic programs, agricultural experiment station, cooperative extension, and CALS administrative services. The Executive Council meets weekly and on a monthly basis meets with the campus unit heads. Individual members of the Executive Council serve as a liaison to the major CALS governance councils.
 
Heads of Departments
This group includes all department and unit heads for on-campus units. This numbers approximately 14 units. The "HODS" meet twice a month; one meeting with only HODS present and one meeting jointly with the Executive Council. The Head HOD is elected by the group and discussion topics vary widely on topics of interest to the HODS. Meetings often include presentations by representatives of various offices around the university. Liaison for Executive Council to Department Heads group is: Gene Sander
 
County Extension Directors.
This group includes the extension director from each of the 15 Arizona counties and a Cooperative Extension employee from the Navajo Nation. Liaison for Executive Council to the County Extension Directors is: Jim Christenson
 
 
Administrative Council
This group consists of all the administrative groups above, plus a few other administrators. It includes the HODS, county extension directors, directors of agricultural research centers, executive council, and about 5 other administrative offices. The total is about 45 and it generally meets as an annual retreat. Topics to be discussed are developed by a committee representing the types of people present.
