Tuesday Morning Notes

July 21, 2009

NAVAJO COUNTY OFFICE GOES TO 4-DAY WORK WEEK:

A six-month pilot program in Navajo County that will implement a four day work week goes into effect on Monday, August 3. Most offices in that county, including the Navajo County Extension offices housed in the county complex in Holbrook and Pinetop, will be open Monday-Thursday from 7:00am-6:00pm and closed on Fridays. Navajo County is the first county in the state to implement the 4-10 work week and other counties may follow. This would only affect Extension offices housed in county buildings.

ACE DRUPAL WEB SITE TRAINING:

Exciting new changes are coming for our Cooperative Extension Websites. We are moving forward with the transition of the ACE state Website to a content management system called Drupal. Using this content management system you, or your designee(s), will be able to put your program and event information content directly into the Web site right from your computers. And you will be able to easily change and update your program information. We will offer a number of trainings to help you learn how to enter content. Our first trainings will focus on getting state program information and events into the database. These training will take place on the UA campus in the Forbes computer lab. We will offer trainings via Breeze at a later date, and may be able to offer some on-site trainings when we are ready to input county information. If interested in learning how to put state program and event information into the site, please go to Doodle at doodle.com/d5tski4qrtdc8zzq to indicate your availability. Class sizes will be limited to 8 people, so indicate all dates/times that you are available. If you have questions, contact Sheila Merrigan (merrigan@cals.arizona.edu, 520.626.6543).

PROPOSAL FOR EXTENSION PROGRAM FUNDING:

A proposal for Extension program funding titled "Connecting Youth with Science, Technology and the Outdoors" has been drafted. It will address the signature program areas "Connect Youth and Families with the Outdoors" and "Science Technology, Engineering and Math" (STEM). To find out more, go to cals.arizona.edu/cochise/files/stemproposal.doc to download the document. If you are interested in participating on the team, contact Curt Peters (cpeters@cals.arizona.edu) or Susan Pater (spater@cals.arizona.edu). One of them will share the proposal with you through Google docs for you to add comments. They would like to know your interest by Monday, July 27.

MORE ON EXTENSION PROGRAM FUNDING:

In addition to the note this morning from Curt and Susan, a few other "notes of intent" for program funding for next fiscal year were received and information is available at ace.clover.cals.arizona.edu/state/employee-resources. Also, we are still welcoming feedback for our new site!

JOURNAL OF EXTENSION:

The Journal of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development (JAERD) is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal published monthly by Academic Journals. JAERD is dedicated to increasing the depth of research across all areas of this subject and is seeking qualified researchers to join its editorial team as editors, subeditors or reviewers. If interested, you can send your resume to jaerd.journal@gmail.com. In addition, JAERD welcomes the submission of manuscripts that meet the general criteria of significance and scientific excellence in this subject area, and will publish original articles in basic and applied research; case studies; and critical reviews, surveys, opinions, commentaries and essays. You can submit your manuscript(s) to jaerd.journal@gmail.com for publication in the Maiden Issue (October 2009). Their objective is to inform authors of the decision on their manuscript(s) within four weeks of submission. Following acceptance, a paper will normally be published in the next issue. Instruction for authors and other details are available on their Website (academicjournals.org/JAERD/Instruction.htm).

FOUNDATIONS OF PRACTICE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:

The Regional Rural Development Center's joint effort project, The Foundations of Practice (srdc.msstate.edu/fop/), has received a new look. Now a national effort, this training draws from a team of faculty from across the U.S. They are also providing a seven-part series, taught and archived online using Adobe Connect, and Level 1 is being offered on either September 29 or September 30.
