Tuesday Morning Notes

June 9, 2009

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Cynthia Flynn has been with Pima County Cooperative Extension for 27 years and was with Michigan State University Cooperative Extension for 8 years — for a grand total of 35 years in Extension. Cynthia is retiring at the end of June and Pima County is hosting an open house reception for her at the Pima County Cooperative Extension, 4210 N. Campbell Avenue, on June 30, 2009, from 3:00 to 5:00. Stop by and help us wish Cynthia the best as she moves on to another phase in her life.

Rick Gibson, Pinal County Extension Director and Kerry Schwartz, Director Arizona Project WET (APW), spent over a year developing a relationship with Abbott Laboratories, operator of a major nutritional product production facility in Casa Grande. Their work has paid off. Through a $100,000 contribution, Abbott Laboratories has agreed to sponsor specific water conservation programs, first in the Casa Grande area, and then later in other communities in Pinal County. In addition to adding a new branch to the statewide APW Program, the contribution provides for adult education through directed programming. Accordingly, we welcome new program coordinator, Tasha Krecek (tasha@cals.arizona.edu), who will create Arizona Project WET programs, support Local Drought Impact Group (LDIG) projects, and focus Master Gardener volunteer low water use landscape outreach efforts. Tasha can be reached at 520.836.5221, x210.

STRATEGIC PLANNING:

An update on our Cooperative Extension program Strategic Planning process was presented and discussed at the All Associations meeting in Globe last week by Kirk Astroth, Linda Houtkooper and Ed Martin.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUNDS FOR NEXT FISCAL YEAR:

Although the budget situation is still uncertain, I value the importance of professional improvement. For FY09-10, we will continue the policy for faculty travel to support their professional career development through attendance or training for specific educational experiences, materials, or professional meetings and events. Faculty with 100% Extension appointments are eligible for a maximum of $1,000 per fiscal year; the amount will be adjusted based on the Extension appointment percentage. All requests must be submitted in writing in advance. The submission must include: a) a 3-5 year professional development career plan with yearly updated goals and plans of action, and b) the dates of travel and estimated expenses. All requests must have the approval of the appropriate County Director or Department Head prior to being sent to the Extension Programs Office (Forbes 301). There is no carryover of funding from one fiscal year to the next. Travel support for elected officials for attending national association meetings has been suspended. For complete information, go to: cals.arizona.edu/extension/employee/travel.html#faculty. If you have any questions, contact Patti B. (pattib@cals.arizona.edu, 520.621.5308).
