Tuesday Morning Notes

May 19, 2009

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

I'd like to welcome Steve Husman, Resident Director, Campus Ag Center, who will take on the additional role of Acting County Extension Director in our Pima County office as of July 1. Steve will be taking over the administrative duties of Cynthia Flynn after her June 30 retirement.

Kristine Uhlman was interviewed for an upcoming "Life After People" episode that investigates the following question:  How long would it take for groundwater elevations and desert rivers to recover if people were no longer taking the water?  The show will include science interviews and computer simulations that depict Phoenix after people are gone. Kristine will appear on tonight's broadcast which airs at 7:00 pm on the History Channel.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The Water Resources Research Center is pleased to announce the award of the 2009 Montgomery & Associates Summer Internship at the WRRC to David Newman. He is a graduate student at the UA Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and will be entering the second year of his Ph.D. program in the Fall. As the summer intern, he will work on the Arroyo, a WRRC publication published annually, that focuses on a critical Arizona water issue and will be taking a step outside his area of expertise to investigate the many connections between water and energy for the 2010 issue of Arroyo. For more information on the Montgomery & Associates Summer Internship at the WRRC, contact Susanna Eden (seden@cals.arizona.edu).

2009 SPRING AWARDS BANQUET:

Congratulations to several of the 2009 Spring Awards Banquet winners:  Gary & Carolyn Gruenhagen (2008 Extensionists of the Year) and Robert Sandberg (2007 Extensionist of the Year), Deborah Janes (Carol Knowles Award for Excellence in Development & Alumni Relations), The Rovey Family (Heritage Family Award), and Robert Curtis (Friend of CALS Award). EXTENSION PRESENCE ON THE NEW OUTREACH AND EXTENSION PORTAL:

The University will have a link to Outreach and Extension when their new Web site is released this summer. Everyone in Extension has the opportunity to put their program and event information into this new site so it is visible to the public. You also have the opportunity to become more involved with other units within the University that do outreach by joining the UA Collaborative for Community Engagement and Outreach (uacollaborative.ning.com/). Join Sheila Merrigan, Dan McDonald and Lisa Schwartz in an overview and training session on both the Collaborative and inputting data into the new Web portal. Indicate your interest in joining a session by going to this Doodle survey: doodle.com/vzyy9shuv529fuq4. If you have any questions, contact Sheila Merrigan (merrigan@cals.arizona).
