Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Dr. Helen Goetz, former faculty member in the School of Home Economics. She passed away on March 4 with services held on March 12. Helen earned her BS in Home Economics Ed (1958) and her MS in Family Economics (1962) from the University of Arizona before joining Extension in 1958 and subsequently the School of Home Economics in 1963. In 1967 she joined the University of Alabama, but retired and returned to Tucson in 1977. She was a founder of the Council of Alumni & Friends of the Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, an active member of many other boards and committees, and received numerous awards such as the Lifetime Award from the UA College of Agriculture and the Sidney S. Congratulations to John Palumbo, Extension Research Entomologist, Yuma Ag Center, who received the 2008 CAPCA Outstanding Contribution to Agriculture Award in recognition of his invaluable service to Pest Control Advisors in California and Arizona.
On March 11-12, the 2009 Southwest Ag Summit took place in Yuma. Presentations by Arizona Extension faculty included Jorge Fonseca, Mike Ottman, Jeff Silvertooth, Barry Tickes, Paul Brown, and Charles Sanchez. The two-day summit, developed in conjunction with the Yuma Fresh Vegetable Association, attracted over 700 pest control advisors, growers, shippers, industry representatives, and production personnel. They were provided new production management models, advances in new and emerging technologies, issues involving food safety, nutrient/irrigation management and sessions involving agricultural globalization. The outreach format of the summit was in the form of keynote presentations, educational forums, field day demonstrations and industry displays. The 2009 summit was highlighted by a special presentation by the President and CEO of Case IH, Inc., Randy Baker, who offered his expert views on the future of global and mechanized agriculture. My thanks to Kurt Nolte who help facilitate the event.
