KudosCongratulations!Sharon Hoelscher Day, an area agent in family and consumer sciences with The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, was recently honored by the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences, or NEAFCS. Hoelscher Day, of the extension in Maricopa County, received the 2008 Extension Educator of the Year award at the Extension Galaxy Conference in Indianapolis. The conference was attended by 2,500 extension professionals from more than 70 land-grant universities and the United States Department of Agriculture. Read more..... JOE Article – Meth Prevention Education: Kirk Astroth, assistant director, 4-H youth development, had an article published in the October 2008 issue of the Journal of Extension. The article, titled Methamphetamine Prevention Education: Extension Responds to a National Issue, describes a collaborative Extension effort in Montana among several specialists, agents and other organizations to address the meth issue from an educational perspective. The article discusses lessons learned and what other states can do to address such a critical issue. "Tools for Schools," one of the elements of this comprehensive prevention initiative, was developed under Astroth's leadership and was selected as a USDA "Program of Distinction" in 2007. Dave Kopec was awarded the Distinguished Service Award and Jack Kelly received the Achievement Award at the Annual NACAA AM/PIC held in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 19th. In addition, Jack Kelly and Mary Olsen received a National Finalist Award for their publication 'Problems and Pests of Agave, Aloe, Cactus and Yucca ' and Jack Kelly and Ursula Schuch received an award as a regional winner in the Computer Generated Graphics category for their CD on 'Selecting, Planting and Staking Trees'. Rick Gibson Elected President-Elect of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents For the first time in its 92-year history, the National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) http://www.nacaa.com/recently elected an extension agent from Arizona as its next president . Rick Gibson, agriculture extension agent and county extension director for the Pinal County office of the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, was elected by the voting delegates of the organization on July 17, 2007 at the annual meeting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. |
