The University of Arizona Rodeo Team made an outstanding showing during the fall 2011 rodeo season. Individuals represented the University well at every rodeo and brought home cash prizes at many of the rodeos. At the October 7th & 8th rodeo the UA Women's Team placed second overall amongst much larger teams. The team is looking forward to the 2012 spring rodeo season that will begin in February and end in April.
In the region year-end standings the UA Women's Team is currently ranked fifth overall with Ashley Haller fourth, Kayla Lewis eighth and Kellie Wiersma twelfth in Barrel Racing, and Kayla Shores third and Ellen Whitehead twelfth in Breakaway Roping. The standings go toward qualifying for the coveted College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming this summer. The top three contestants in each event as well as the top two teams in the team standings will all qualify for CNFR. The team is hoping to send contestants to the finals for the first time in several years.
The University of Arizona Rodeo Club will host its 73rd annual intercollegiate rodeo on February 3rd – 5th 2012 at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds. Parking and admittance are free to this all ages event. This rodeo will feature about 200 collegiate cowboys and cowgirls from 10 Colleges and Universities located in New Mexico and Arizona. Slack will start at 8:00 a.m. on February 4th with the performance scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. Slack is the portion of the rodeo that allows competitors to compete that have not been selected for the events in the performance. Winners of each event, as well as the Men's and Women's All Around Champions will be awarded with a trophy buckle.
