  ARIZONA AGRICULTURAL LITERACY DAY

The purpose of Agricultural Literacy Day is that agriculturalists across Arizona will read a selected book to third grade students and then donate the book to the school library. The day is scheduled to occur Thanksgiving week of each year. Students will get to meet someone involved in agriculture and ask questions of the volunteer about their role in agriculture.

If you are interested in participating in the event, contact Monica Pastor to find out the date for this year's event. Then contact an elementary school near your home or work and volunteer to read to one or all of their third grade classes. If you read to one class, it will take about 20 minutes. You will read the book and then answer questions from the students about the book and about your involvement in agriculture.

Teachers are given a sample test they can give to their students to measure comprehension. The test is modeled after the third grade AIMS test.

This event is coordinated through the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Agricultural Literacy Program and funded by Salt River Project.
